Overall type: Community Hall Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.


Description:

A community hall constructed of timber, partly painted black and white and partly rendered, with a tile roof, timber windowframes and a stone to each side of the entrance door bearing inscriptions incised in upright capital letting. The hall is on a plot of land of about 0.13ha which is also laid out to car parking and a lawn. A cedar tree growing in the lawn was cut down and the standing trunk carved into a figure of a WW1 soldier with other parts carved into items of kit.

History and Conservation
c1920s: The site was donated by His Grace Victor Cavendish, KG, GCVO, GCVO, PC, 9th Duke of Devonshire.

c1929: The hall was constructed at a cost of £1700 in 1929, the funding raised by local contributions.

28th September, 1929: The hall was opened by His Grace Victor Cavendish KG GCVO GCVO TD PC, 9th Duke of Devonshire.

17th April, 1951: The memorial lies within the Peak District National Park designated on that date.

12th February, 2014: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson. It was in fair condition and well cared for.

2016: A grant of £1,660 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards a Professional Advice Grant regarding the replacement of the windows with double glazing.

2017: A grant of £26,370 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards repair and reinstatement of timber windows and doors using traditional joinery methods to match the existing as closely as possible but incorporating double glazing in some of the windows.

c2018: A cedar tree growing in front of the hall was cut down and the trunk carved into a figure of a WW1 soldier with his kit.

Comments
Some documents suggest that the institute was opened in 1932 by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) but his visit on 2nd June that year is now known to have been to meet those involved in a lead mining accident.
