Location details:
Towards the northern corner of the compartment, about three rows west from the main path and about 8 rows south from the side path.
Type
Overall type: Addition to gravestone Overall condition: Fair. The headstone is intact but the shallowly engraved inscription has lost its gilding and is barely visible against the mottled stone.


Description:

A mottled black and white granite headstone on a family grave. The upright oblong headstone has stepped shoulders and the face bears incised scrolls at the shoulders and an incised inscription in upright capital block lettering, originally gilded but the gilding is now mainly lost and the inscription is therefore barely legible. The headstone surmounts a plain oblong granite base with a central aperture for the placement of tributes.

11th January, 2022: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair structural condition.

The casualty is recorded by CWGC as Serjeant 49483 James Smith, D Bty. 256th Bde Royal Field Artillery who died on 5th April, 1917 aged 44 He is commemorated at Haute-Avesnes British Cemetery, about half way between Amiens and Lille.
