Location details:
The memorial is on the north side of the road, just west of the junction with Mapperley La.
Type
Overall type: Bench Overall condition: Pristine. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.


Description:

A black metal bench accompanied by two planters. The end frames of the bench are of shaped tubular metal with the seat formed from horizontal rails. The backrest is formed from sheet metal cut to portray a group of WW1 infantrymen crossing barbed wire with, to one side a trellis bearing the plaque and a spray of red poppies. The oblong stainless steel plaque bears an incised inscription in upright sentence case block lettering infilled in black.The two planters each bear an inscription in golden upright sentence case block lettering.

[* The end of WW1 is widely believed to have been on 11th November, 1918, however that was only the commencement of the cease fire. Alternative interpretations include 28th June, 1919, when the peace treaty (The Treaty of Versailles) was signed. Unfortunately the treaty did not take effect until all participant countries ratified it, which the USA did not do until 2nd July, 1921.]

History and Conservation
2019: The memorial was procured and installed by West Hallam Parish Council. The bench was manufactured by David Ogilvie Engineering Limited of Kilmarnock, Scotland.

27th October, 2019: The memorial was blessed by Rev Gill Turner-Callis, Rector of West Hallam and Mapperley with Stanley. The ceremony was photographed by Roger Wood and subsequently the memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson, when it was in pristine condition and cared for.
