Location details:
The memorial is at the western end of the churchyard, at the junction with Church La.
Type
Overall type: Cross Overall condition: Good. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.


Description:

Reportedly a Hopton Limestone* Cross on a pedestal, plinth and base, with three plaques bearing inscriptions and names. The 6 o'clock face of the wheel, cross and the top two-thirds of the shaft have bosses, roundals and intertwined snakes carved in relief in the Celtic or Anglo-Saxon style. The cross surmounts an oblong pedestal with curved battered faces and a stepped top with rounded arrises, which in turn surmounts a square plinth with vertical faces, and the whole surmounts an oblong base. The 6 o'clock face of the plinth bears a cavo-relievo inscription in upright capital block lettering and three faces of the pedestal bear bronze plaques with inscriptions and names in upright capital roman raised lettering.

* Note, however, that the memorial has previously been described as Derbyshire gritstone or as sandstone, but contemporary newspapers reported it as Hopton Stone and the two former quarries at Hopton produced limestone.

History and Conservation
c1919-1920: The memorial was procured and erected by the parishioners of Breadsall.

31st May, 1921: The memorial was unveiled at a ceremony led by Rev R P Bosworth, Vicar of Breadsall. It was unveiled by Sir Alfred Seale Haslam and dedicated by Rt Rev Charles T Abraham, Bishop Suffragan of Derby.

12th June, 1945: The WW2 additions were unveiled and dedicated by Rev A G Grime MA.

Unknown date: The memorial lies within the Breadsall Conservation Area.

13th April, 2021: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in good condition and well cared for.
