Description:
A white marble sculpture of two soldiers on a gritstone pedestal and three-stepped base. The pedestal and base also bear ten marble tablets, a metal plaque and a stone wreath.
The two soldiers are manning a Vickers machine gun. Both wear 1914 pattern service dress with caps and carry light equipment. The gun is elevated in what appears to be an indirect fire with the gunner crouched behind it and the loader standing upright at the side. Both figures appear relaxed and very smartly dressed, as if on a training exercise rather than in action. Foliage and rubble provides the filler to make the gun tripod solid and there are two ammunition boxes by the loader's right foot. The foot of the carving bears the opening inscription inlaid in upright capital roman lettering.
The oblong gritstone ashlar pedestal has a capstone with moulded cornice and small oblong panels of foliage in relief between the eight marble tablets on its faces, three on the front, three on the back and one on each end. The tablets bear a further inscription and the WW1 names inlaid in various styles of upright lettering. A marble frieze is set into the base of the pedestal and bears an incised inscription in upright capital roman lettering.
The gritstone ashlar three-stepped base has an inclined carved stone laurel wreath at the centre flanked by a pair of inclined marble tablets bearing the WW2 inscription and names inlaid in upright capital roman lettering. A further metal plaque low on the front bears dedication information in raised upright capital lettering.

An as yet unconfirmed report is that the sculpture was developed from photographs of the gunners posing in dress uniform at the former drill hall located between Siddals Road and Copeland St, Derby.
