Type
Overall type: Figure. Overall condition: Fair. The inscriptions are legible and the memorial is cared for.

Description:

An imposing monument of which the most prominent component is a cast bronze figure of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, represented by a winged figure with victor's laurel raised in the left hand and a downward pointing sword of peace in the right hand. The sculptor's name is at the foot. The figure stands before an obelisk and both components surmount a decorative plinth, a pedestal, a plain lower plinth and a two-stepped base.

The sandstone ashlar obelisk has a stepped and pyramidal top above a bronze band bearing, on each face, a lion's head between stiff-leaf panels. At the foot of the other three faces are tapered projecting panels bearing bronze plaques containing the names of the WW1 fallen and surmounted by a bronze laurel wreath with ribbons.

The decorative plinth has, on three sides, a plain ovolo moulding above an inverted plain cavetto moulding, but on the fourth side it projects to form a semicircular support for the figure and the sculptor's name is incised on the corner. The oblong base has a curved front bearing a bronze inscription below the figure and has bronze plaques on two of its faces, each added after subsequent conflicts. It surmounts a plain plinth with hollow chamfered top. The two-stepped base also has a curved front.

The various bronze plaques have plain narrow raised borders with inscriptions and names in raised upright capital block or roman lettering.

The whole memorial originally stood within a paved area but subsequent restoration projects have added a low surrounding wall with steps providing access from higher and lower levels of the sloping site.
