Type
Overall type: Cross Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.


Description:

Originally a wooden canopied crucifix on a stone base but the base was later replaced in brickwork. The plain wooden cross has a wooden board canopy and bears a bronze figure of Jesus surmounted by a bronze scroll bearing the letters INRI. Below the figure are two metal plaques, that on the 6 o'clock face bearing the WW1 inscription and that on the 3 o'clock face added later and bearing the WW2 inscription. The oblong base was originally of mortared random rubble but the replacement is of blue bricks, the upper ones with chamfered edges. The whole surmounts an oblong concrete foundation.

Unknown date c1920: The memorial was installed.

Unknown date c1940: The WW2 plaque was added.

23rd May, 2008: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in poor condition: the base was crumbling although the remainder of the memorial was in fair condition.

Unknown date c2014: The base was replaced.

11th March, 2019: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair condition and cared for.

A notice inside the church states that “… the remaining stone of the churchyard cross (fourteenth century) forms the socket of the present calvary given in memory of those fallen in the Great War 1914-1918.”
